Velidhu Island Resort

Velidhu Island Resort

The Velidhu Island Resort, with new ownership and management from Sri Lanka, has been steadily improving and has grown to become one of the top resorts in the Maldives. Originally rough and unkempt, this resort is turning into a beautiful place for a cheap holiday to the Maldives.

The island is of medium size and covered with tufts of vegetation. There are many beaches, all of which could be called very natural. The paths that line the island are also very natural and give guests a sense of what it is like to be on an island untouched by man. The most popular beach is on the south side of the island, along with the bar and main jetty. The beaches are being improved and cleaned up as the new management tries to correct the mistakes of the old.

Bungalows and buffets

The rooms offered at Velidhu Island are bungalows. There were originally thirty rooms that dotted the island, and then another thirty were added, and finally another twenty were added. If a view is important, it must be requested when making reservations. There are also twenty water bungalows for reservation, four of which have their own jacuzzis. The rooms are solid and offer typical amenities. Most are of the same quality, with minor differences in size and amenities.

The main restaurant, the bar and the activity area sit apart from the rest of the island. The themes are very natural as is the décor. There is a wonderful variety for guests to choose from including buffets, specialised buffets (think seafood night) and set meals. The food is great and the bar is fully stocked. The bar also has a platform where barbecue and dances are held into the night as the music spills out. There is a finely tended garden around this area of the island and the vast improvements the new management has made can be seen to being to make their mark in turning this resort around.

Dive school and snorkelling

There is a dive school available, run by a few friendly Germans, that draws a lot of guests to the resort. There is also a reef that is very close to the south side of Velidhu Island that offers prime snorkelling. The dive school also organises boat trips to certain spots on the reef, that keeps continuing out into the sea, as it is close then to a number of other dive spots, including the famous hammerhead shark area.

There is, of course, also a beautiful protected lagoon that is perfect for water sports, and excursions to uninhabited nearby islands. Guests will be amazed at the wonderful improvements and opportunities for excitement at the up and coming Velidhu Island Resort.
