Velavaru Island Resort

Velavaru Island Resort

Velavaru Island Resort is isolated from the hustle and bustle of the real world. In fact, it takes forty minutes to reach via sea plane from Male. The forty minute trip is absolutely worth it as Velavaru offers some of the best food, diving and beaches in the Maldives. The island, of course isolated, has a beautiful large lagoon that immediately attracts fun water sports and swimming. The beach is wonderful for sun tanners and children alike. There are thickets of vegetation like palm trees and bush. In fact, Velavaru likes to boast of the indigenous turtle population that has dwindled since the beginning of the resort.

The resort name, Velavaru, is actually based on the native Maldivian word for turtle: velaa. Many turtles have disappeared over recent years, however, the Velavaru staff claim to help turtles who return to lay eggs. The island itself is a great scene of nature's beauty that should not be ignored in a trip to the Maldives.

The best dive school in the maldives

The diving off Velavaru Island is superb in that it is only one of two resorts with access to a particular atoll that offers the best diving the Maldives have to offer. On Velavaru Island is a dive school run by Ocean Pro that is considered among the best in the area. They will take you to some of the best diving in the Maldives. Of course, the currents are strong, but this offers prime opportunities to those that wish to see large fish like sting rays, sharks and dolphins. Many happy divers have told of their wonderful views of such fish upon returning to the resort.

snorkelling is not very popular due to the lack of a house reef at Velavaru. However, there are two free boat trips twice a day to reefs for those that require snorkelling. The beach is superb, with a wonderful lagoon that is perfect for waters sports and swimming.

Great rooms and superb food

The Velavaru Island Resort is very well known for their superb food. The management takes great pride in offering delicacies such as shrimp butter sauce, pasta with chick peas and many more culinary delights to guests at the resort. The buffets here are very unpredictable, in a good way. Velavaru Island also boasts very quiet, relaxed evenings; there is no scheduled entertainment and guests have the ability to relax from their stressful and hectic lives back home. There is even a great trip to an uninhabited island about forty five minutes away for those that need even more seclusions.

The rooms are great, although not all have direct beach access, which must be reserved specifically. The buildings, in keeping with island tradition, are shaped like turtle shells. A holiday to the Velavaru Island Resort really is something that will not be forgotten and probably repeated!
